Tom Selleck is a household name in the Hollywood industry thanks to his stellar portrayal of different roles through the years. Let's take a look at some of his most iconic moments on screen.
Before Tom Selleck was an A-list actor, he was first a basketball player with on-screen guestings on "The Dating Game" and commercials with Pepsi. However, when he was on a crossroad between becoming a management-trainee at United Airlines and pursuing his acting career, well, we all know which one he chose.
It wasn't always easy for Tom Selleck in Hollywood, but he finally got his big break in 1980, when he was cast in "Magnum P.I.," which leads us to our first scene:
Selleck starred as the private investigator on the series for eight years. It launched him into stardom, which landed him more roles through the years.
The show was too good to be true at the time - it was set in Hawaii, had girls in bikinis, guns, a Ferrari, and a whole lot of car chases.
In this scene, Thomas Magnum, a Vietnam war veteran, came face to face with Ivan, the man who kept him and his friends Captive during the war. Ivan came to Hawaii to kill them, and he successfully kills one of Magnum's closest friends.
Magnum decides to get revenge, and although he was talked down by Ivan, he got what he wanted in the end.
On the hit '90s show "FRIENDS," Selleck played Dr. Richard Burke, the love interest of lead character Monica Geller. Burke was 21 years older than Monica and was close friends with her parents.
Ultimately, their relationship didn't work out and that ended his role in the series. However, during their last night together, they made sure to talk things through properly and have "one last game of racketball."
On "Her Alibi," Selleck plays novelist Phil Blackwood. He falls in love with a murder suspect named Nina Lonescu, whom as time goes by, shows more and more hints that she is actually a great danger.
In one scene where he is reunited with his family, his family tries to share their feelings about Nina. He defends his love interest, only for his family not to listen to him intently as they discussed the flavor of the salad they were eating.
After realizing that Phil noticed they weren't listening, his sister ended by hinting that they thought he was explaining Nina as a complete stranger who lives in his home.
In "Blue Bloods," the family dinner scene has been a staple throughout the years. It's one of the most consistent parts of the show that people look forward to. However, it wasn't always an easy scene for Tom to film.
In fact, his very first dinner scene was a challenge for him, because he and his castmates didn't know one another well yet at the time. He disclosed:
“That was a little scary because we had no relationship. We just kind of said ‘How do you do?’ and sat down to family dinner.”
While it was a nervewracking experience for him, it turned out well, as it was not just well-received by the audience, but was made a staple in the show as well.
In 1997, "In & Out" hit theaters after being inspired by Tom Hanks' tearful acceptance speech for his 1994 Oscar for "Philadelphia." He mentions his high-school drama coach Rawley Farnsworth, and his former classmate John Gilkerson, two of the "finest gay Americans, two wonderful men that I had the good fortune to be associated with."
In the movie twist, Howard Brackett, played by Kevin Kline, is a well-loved English teacher who lives a quiet life with his fiancee, Emily Montgomery. His former student, Cameron Drake, played by Matt Dillon, won a Best Actor category at the Academy Awards for portraying a gay soldier on "Serve and Protect."
After the acceptance speech, Howard's entire circle is shocked, and he himself was angered. Through the next couple of weeks, he meets Peter Malloy (Tom Selleck), who tries to get him to come out.
In one scene, Peter kisses Howard for 12 seconds, which led to his acceptance that he is, indeed, gay.
Which of Tom Selleck's scenes is your favorite?
