Businesswoman and TV personality, Martha Stewart shares her deep empathy for Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman who are among the parents charged in the College Admission bribery scandal.
She said this on Tuesday at the "Time100" Gala which was celebrating the "Most Influential Public Figures" named by "Time Magazine" at Lincoln Center in New York City. “I feel sorry for them,” she said while speaking with Brooke Anderson of "ET."
The business mogul knows what it feels like to be in such a situation. Martha was indicted in 2004 for a multiple felony count charge after lying to a Federal investigator about stock sales. She was sentenced to 5 months in prison and later got released in March 2005.
Lori Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli were charged with a double count of conniving to commit fraud and money laundering. The couple was accused of paying up to $500,000 for their daughters to gain admission into the University of Southern California.
They were indicted for bribing coaches to make their daughters designated crew recruits, which would aid the admission process.
The actress and her fashion designer husband pled not-guilty to the charges and have decided that they are going to fight the charges against them, although their arraignment dates have not been set and the couple has not made any public statement about the matter.
If found guilty, they may be facing a punishment of 40 years in prison. A day before Lori and her husband were charged, Felicity Huffman was also indicted with count charges of mail fraud and honest services fraud, she was among the 13 parents that pleaded guilty to the count charges.
She was accused of paying an amount close to $15,000 for her daughter to pass the SAT. The "Desperate Housewives’" star could be facing a reduced sentence of 4-10 months in prison because of her plea.
In her released statement to USA TODAY, she expressed her regret and shame over her actions while also accepting full responsibility and consequences for her actions.
During the interview, Martha also spoke about people who have impacted her life till date. The 77-year-old mentioned Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and famous comedian, Jimmy Fallon.
She reiterated on Pelosi’s “Strength and Stamina” and regarded her as “knowledgeable, smart and straight forward.” While she appreciated Fallon’s sense of humor and concluded by saying, “Everybody here influenced me in some way.”
