Fantasia Barrino teamed up with singers Andra Day, Alessia Cara and Brandi Carlile to pay tribute to the late Aretha Franklin with a performance of her classic hit, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” If online reactions are anything to go by, however, the “American Idol” winner stole the show. See for yourself below.
Over a dozen artists were at the Shrine Auditorium in LA to honor the life and times of the Queen of Soul at the “Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul” concert.
Although taped in January, the show aired this past weekend on March 10 and viewers were treated to breathtaking performances of numerous “Aretha Franklin” hits from start to finish.
After a slew of renditions, the quartet of Barrino, Day, Cara and Carlile rounded off the show with a soul-stirring recreation of the 1967 hit tune “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”
Each performer, a female vocal powerhouse in their own right, did justice to the song, but Barrino’s perfect transitions and ability to sustain insanely high pitches could not be missed.
Social media users took note as well and said as much, with some calling Barrino “the next Queen [of Soul].”
“They knew damn well the only person that needed to be on that stage was Fantasia,” a Twitter user wrote underneath a posted clip of the performance. “But ok let the other girls have their moment... I guess.”
Replying to a separate tweet about the performance, another Twitter user insisted Barrino is “better in the soul genre format.”
“Notice: Dear mainstream America! Fantasia does not need help. The ladies should not be on stage with her. They should have been in the audience she is just better in the soul genre format. Period.”
“Fantasia stole the show. Sorry ladies” quipped the third person.
Earlier during the show, Barrino wowed over 5,000 members of the audience when she put up a lively performance of “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)” alongside Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Rob Thomas. The hit tune was initially performed by Franklin and another music legend, the late George Michael.
“Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul” was conceived by Franklin’s longtime collaborator and chief creative officer for Sony Music, Clive Davis and aired 15 days to what would have been the iconic singer’s 77th birthday.
Filmmaker Tyler Perry hosted the posthumous celebration which boasted an impressive lineup of star acts that paid tribute with one “Aretha Franklin” hit after another.
Jennifer Hudson kicked off the event with her rendition of two iconic “Aretha Franklin” tunes, "Respect" and "Think," while Patti LaBelle struck some high notes in her hair-raising performance of the 1970 hit “Call Me.”
Janelle Monae got the audience moving with her upbeat delivery of the 1971 classic tune, “Rock Steady,” and youngsters Chloe x Halle did the same with “Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves.”
Meanwhile, the trio of Yolanda Adams, Shirley Caesar, and BeBe Winans paid tribute to Franklin’s gospel roots with three of her evergreens, “Never Grow Old,” “Mary Don't You Weep,” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”
Céline Dion, Smokey Robinson, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, SZA, Common, and H.E.R. are some of the other music heavyweights listed for the big night.
Franklin passed away last August after a longtime battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 76.
