Michelle Obama is celebrating 55 years of life, and her husband took to Instagram with a throwback photo to honor her in the special day. While Barack is known for his lengthy and heartfelt messages, this time around he kept it short and sweet.
The former president took to social media to publicly congratulate his wife and mother of his children on her 55th birthday. He did so by sharing an adorable decades-old photo of the two of them as a young couple.
In the picture, a young Barack wears a black t-shirt with a jacket, as he slung his arm around Michelle, who was also donning a jacket, blue sweatshirt, and silver hoop earrings. Both smile directly to the camera, proving that even after more than twenty years together, they’re still a stable and happy couple.
Obama made sure to remind his wife of one the things he loves about her, writing in the caption:
“I knew it way back then and I’m absolutely convinced of it today — you’re one of a kind, @MichelleObama. Happy Birthday!”
Fans of the power couple filled the comment section with their best birthday wishes for Michelle, while others mentioned how cute the Obamas were back then, and others thanked them for being such a great example of “black love magic.”
“@stephanieitzel: Omg!! You guys are adorable! Even to this day! we miss you!”
"@jeweliettangen: Thanks for always working in your relationship and give us something to aspire to.”
“@maryviehweg: Happy birthday, Michelle! Such a sweet post! Love the old photo.”
Barack and Michelle first met in 1989 at a law firm, where Michelle was assigned as Obama’s adviser. They married in 1992 after three years of dating, and are now the parents of two beautiful young girls, Malia, 20 and Sasha Obama, 17.
However, not everything was smooth sailing for the couple, as Michelle recently revealed in her memoir book, “Becoming.”
The former first lady opened about the struggles in her relationship with Barack, getting marriage counseling, facing the ups and downs of being in the eye of the hurricane at the White House, suffering a miscarriage, and finally being able to conceive her daughters through IVF.
Talking to Oprah Winfrey for ELLE magazine, Obama said about couple’s counseling:
“Well, you go because you think the counselor is going to help you make your case against the other person. 'Would you tell him about himself?!' And lo and behold, counseling wasn’t that at all. It was about me exploring my sense of happiness. What clicked in me was that I need support and I need some from him. But I needed to figure out how to build my life in a way that works for me."
These days, the couple is stronger than ever, and they proved that last October on their 26th wedding anniversary by sharing sweet messages for each other on Twitter.
First, Barack posted a picture of his wife looking out of a window, and captioned it:
“Happy Anniversary, @MichelleObama. For 26 years, you’ve been an extraordinary partner, someone who can always make me laugh, and my favorite person to see the world with."
In return, the former first lady and best-selling author quoted her husband’s tweet and added her message, saying:
“Thank you @barackobama for 26+ years of love, trust, and respect—for being a man who always lifts up and honors me and our wonderful girls. Each day I’m with you, I’m reminded of what a treasure you truly are to us all."
It's clear why fans believe Barack and Michelle are great examples of a respectable marriage, and the fact that they're open about their struggles makes them even more relatable to many.
