Michelle Obama gets candid about why she and the Queen put their arms around each other during a G20

The former First Lady, Michelle Obama, finally revealed the real reason why she and the Queen placed their arms around each other during a G20 summit. Supposedly, they were talking about how their feet hurt.

In 2009, many people question why Michelle chose to put her arm around the Queen’s shoulders when they were at a Buckingham Palace reception. What boggled the minds of the public, even more, was the fact that the monarch returned the gesture by placing her arm around Michelle’s waist.

In her recently published memoir, “Becoming,” Michelle shared her interesting conversation with the Queen about the pain of having to wear high heels all day.

She wrote, “The Queen then glanced down at the pair of black Jimmy Choos I was wearing. She shook her head.”

Afterward, the Queen asked, “These shoes are unpleasant, are they not?” as she gestured towards her own black heels.

“I confessed then to the Queen that my feet were hurting. She confessed that hers hurt, too. We looked at each other then with identical expressions, like, when is all this standing around with world leaders going to finally wrap up? And with this, she busted out with a fully charming laugh.”

Michelle further explained that during that moment, they were just “two tired ladies oppressed by our shoes.”

Only then did she absentmindedly place her arm around the Queen. Michelle said it was supposedly a gesture of bonding.

Royal fans were not too happy about it when the photos of the two powerful ladies placing their arms around each other surfaced worldwide. To them, it was a breach of royal protocol, but for Michelle, she said the Queen seemed okay with it.

“I then did what's instinctive to me any time I feel connected to a new person, which is to express my feelings outwardly. I laid a hand affectionately across her shoulder. I couldn't have known it in the moment, but I was committing what would be deemed an epic faux pas,” she explained.

Even so, while some considered it was wrong, the Queen still returned the warm gesture.

Apart from her interaction with the Queen, Michelle also shared the moment she and her daughter Malia attempted to sneak out of the White House to celebrate marriage equality.

During an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Michelle recalled her and her daughter’s adventure when they tried to sneak past the guards at the White House to celebrate with the public on the day same-sex marriage was made legal in 2015.
